CPU too old? Not enough RAM? We can get you around these issues and on to Windows 11!
What is the Windows 11 eligibility assessment?
The Windows 11 eligibility assessment is a software tool from Microsoft that surveys your PC computer or laptop and lets you know whether or not it will support Windows 11. Windows 11 is the latest Microsoft operating system, released on October 5th 2021. Many Windows 10 computers have already (perhaps even without you realizing) updated to Windows 11. However, unlike previous operating systems, Microsoft is blocking the Windows 11 update on older computers. Well, not just older but less powerful computers. It does make sense not to install an operating system onto a computer that will struggle to support it, but there are some pretty powerful machines around that could and do run Windows 11 very well, but they are not being allowed to upgrade despite having enough power to support the system.
What can be done?
There are a few workarounds in order to get Windows 11 onto an older but still capable computer. There are still some minimum requirements, though, surrounding things like TPM (Trusted Platform Module) or Secure Boot support. Whether or not these are enabled is something you need to do by accessing the computer’s BIOS. There are several different methods of circumventing the prerequisites for a Windows 11 installation. These include:
- Registry edits, using the regedit tool
- Install Windows 11 with launch parameters
- Using a modified install package

This is a heads-up, not a how-to
The point of this article is to let people know that it is sometimes (not always) possible to upgrade to Windows 11, even with an older computer, and this is a service we can provide for customers. However, if you are looking for a how-to guide, here are some great resources to guide you through the process.

We can upgrade some components.
RAM (Random Access Memory) is one of the components you can’t really scrimp on if you want to upgrade to Windows 11. Fortunately, RAM upgrades are relatively cheap and easy for us to do. CPUs are not so easy to upgrade due to motherboard socket limitations. Graphics card can be upgraded. If your computer can be upgraded to facilitate a Windows 11 upgrade, we can discuss the best options with you.
To summarise.
It is not always the right move to install an OS like Windows 11 onto an older computer system, especially if the system was a budget PC or laptop, but Windows 11 does seem to have an overzealously high bar, at least compared to previous operating systems. But if we believe your computer can support Windows 11 and you don’t feel like trying some of the workarounds yourself, we can help; simply get in touch with us.

Here is AI’s opinion on the Windows 11 upgrade workaround, plus some cautionary words…
Disclaimer: While I can provide general guidance, attempting to install Windows 11 on a barred computer may violate terms of service or licensing agreements. Always consult with the manufacturer or Microsoft for specific instructions and to ensure you’re not violating any rules.
Understanding the Barrier:
Many newer versions of Windows, including Windows 11, have specific hardware requirements to ensure optimal performance and compatibility. If your computer is deemed “too old,” it likely doesn’t meet these criteria, such as having a compatible processor, sufficient RAM, or a secure boot mode.
Potential Workarounds:
- Check for Compatibility Updates: Sometimes, manufacturers release BIOS updates or firmware that can enable older hardware to meet Windows 11 requirements. Check your manufacturer’s website for any available updates.
- Upgrade Hardware Components: If possible, consider upgrading components like the processor, RAM, or storage drive to meet Windows 11’s minimum system requirements. This can be costly, but it may be worthwhile if you value Windows 11’s features and want to continue using your existing computer.
- Explore Alternative Operating Systems: If upgrading hardware isn’t feasible, you might consider switching to a different operating system that is more compatible with your older computer. Linux distributions like Ubuntu or Mint are popular alternatives with lower system requirements.
- Unofficial Methods (Caution Advised): Some users have successfully bypassed Windows 11’s compatibility checks using unofficial methods. However, these methods can be risky and lead to instability or security vulnerabilities. Proceed with caution and at your own risk.
Remember: Installing Windows 11 on a barred computer may void your warranty or license agreement. Always research and understand the potential consequences before proceeding. If you’re unsure, it’s best to consult with a professional or consider other options.
Not advisable, according to AI
It is fair to say bypassing the Windows 11 upgrade restriction is not suitable in all cases. But where you have a particularly high-end set up that is just a year older than the cut off it is something that can be worth looking at.
