It’s alright for you; we all like a heatwave, but can your console take the heat?
PS5 and Xbox consoles are known for overheating problems. Here’s why:
PS5 and Xbox overheating has been a problem since the first generations of Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox consoles. Sometimes, this only causes random crashes, but in more acute cases, it can kill your console completely. The console’s internal core processors run extremely hot and need a lot of airflow to stay cool. If that airflow gets blocked, the console can’t cool effectively, and the circuit boards can bend due to the extreme heat. As with many things, prevention is better than cure.
What’s needed?
Consoles can be modified to boost airflow around them. Sometimes, these modifications require drilling additional holes in the console casing, which we don’t recommend. In most situations, the console simply needs a cleanout and service. Consoles are terrible fluff magnates. Drawing, along with the air dust and fibres, and even hail (yuck) into the console and through the cooling fins. This mix of fibres and debris gets caught and creates a barrier, reducing the airflow. Something only a good cleanout can fix.
Exhibit “A” of why it’s overheating
The gradual buildup
There are a few DIY tips to help prevent the fluff buildup:
- Try not to place the console on the floor. The lower down it is, the more dust and fibres it will collect.
- Away from the window or any vents, they can create their own drafts.
- If you do the ironing in the same room as a running console, the lint will fly. Those who do the home ironing will know what I mean.
The overheating console repair
At Maidstone Technology, we disassemble the console, move it down to the logic/motherboard and clean the cooling fins and fans. The latest PS5 and Xbox consoles use liquid metal to connect the heat sink to the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). Still, with previous models, we replaced the thermal compound with a new and improved compound to aid better heat transfer between the GPU and heatsink. Then, reassemble and test.
Repair time
In 90% of PS5 and Xbox overheating repairs, we can collect your game console in the morning and have it returned to you in the evening on the same day.
